The Real Ghost Buster

Why does every candidate (read: everyONE) have a story about being ghosted?

Allow me to preface this piece with: I’ve been guilty of ghosting. I’m not gonna sit here and lie to you on my high horse about how I’ve not done this. Not a good look and certainly hypocritical of me. Let’s do better,

The Reality of Ghosting in Recruitment

In the world of recruitment, ghosting – the practice of ceasing all communication with a candidate without explanation – has become an all-too-common phenomenon. This silent treatment, often unanticipated and perplexing to candidates, is a scenario that needs addressing for a more ethical and empathetic approach to recruitment.

Understanding Why Recruiters Ghost

But why do recruiters ghost candidates? At its core, it often boils down to a psychological response to delivering bad news. The task of informing a candidate that they haven’t been successful can be uncomfortable. For many recruiters, especially those not hiring for their teams, there’s a tendency to view the communication of a rejection as a personal burden – but it’s not.

It’s crucial to remember that recruitment decisions are business decisions. They are not personal evaluations of a candidate's worth. By disassociating ourselves from the decision-making process, we can approach these communications with a level of detachment that is both professional and necessary.

The Importance of Empathy

Detachment does not mean devoid of empathy. Leading with empathy is paramount. Candidates invest time and effort in their applications and interviews. They deserve the courtesy of a response, even if it's not the one they were hoping for. Not only is this a basic professional courtesy, but it also reflects on the company’s brand and reputation in the job market.

A Commitment to Regular Communication

A best recruitment practice is maintaining regular communication with candidates – a minimum of once per week is a good standard. This consistent engagement ensures candidates are not left in the dark about their application status and reinforces the message that their candidacy is being taken seriously.

Personal Reflection: Acknowledging Past Mistakes

On a personal note, I acknowledge that I have been guilty of ghosting candidates in the past. It's a mistake that many of us in the recruitment field have made. However, recognizing this flaw is the first step toward changing our approach. We learn we grow, and we strive to do better – for the candidate experience, for our profession, and for the businesses we represent.

Every Candidate Has a Ghost Story

In the diverse tapestry of job seekers' experiences, one common thread often emerges: nearly every candidate has a story about being ghosted by a recruiter. These stories, varying in detail but similar in sentiment, paint a picture of a prevalent issue in the recruitment industry.

Ghosting leaves candidates in a state of limbo, often leading to unnecessary stress and anxiety. The lack of closure can be disheartening, impacting their confidence and perception of the recruiting process. These stories aren’t just tales of missed opportunities; they're narratives of respect that wasn’t given and professionalism that was lacking.

The impact of these experiences extends beyond the immediate disappointment. Candidates who have been ghosted often share their stories within their professional and personal networks. This not only tarnishes the reputation of the individual recruiter but can also have lasting effects on the employer’s brand. In a world where employer branding is increasingly vital, such negative experiences can dissuade potential talent from considering future opportunities with the company.

Learning from Candidates' Stories

As recruiters, listening to and learning from these stories is crucial. They offer valuable insights into how ghosting is perceived and the ripple effect it can have. By understanding the candidate's perspective, recruiters can develop a more empathetic approach to their communication strategies.

These stories also serve as a reminder of the importance of closing the loop with every candidate, regardless of the outcome of their application. A simple email or phone call can make a significant difference in a candidate’s experience. It’s about acknowledging their effort and time and providing them with the respect and professionalism they deserve.

Embracing a New Standard

Incorporating the lessons from these stories, we, as recruitment professionals, have the opportunity to foster a culture of respect and transparency. Every candidate interaction should be guided by the principles of empathy and professionalism, ensuring that no candidate’s story ends with the uncertainty and disappointment of being ghosted.

While the act of ghosting may seem like an easy way out of a difficult conversation, it is detrimental to both candidates and the recruitment industry's integrity. Embrace a new standard – one of transparency, empathy, and professionalism. By doing so, we not only enhance the candidate experience but also uphold the values and ethics that should define our profession.
